UCSB Beach Chronologic Sequence, April 1972 - January 2020

UCSB Beach - 20 January 2010, 4:47 pm, low tide of +0./9 ft due at 6:09 pm. This image taken after the third of five El Niño storms to hit the Santa Barbara area during the week of January 17-23, 2010. Notice that parts of the beach are almost devoid of sand, so that the "beach" consists of bedrock that has been beveled flat. During large storm events, the large rounded boulders and lesser cobbles at the base of the cliff act as battering rams against the cliff, and their rolling back and forth across the bedrock surface contributes to the erosion and beveling of the rock surface. ©AGS2010.
