hail01

During the early part of our chase of this magnificent super cell storm, we came across a patch of marble-sized hail that had fallen just a few minutes earlier, and we oohed and aahed, and took pictures. Several hours and miles later, we came across another patch that had just fallen in the northeastern New Mexico town of Portales. As you see in the picture below, those hailstones are the size of hens eggs, and they are considerably denser than equivalent sized ice cubes. It was too dark to see if the hailstorm had done any damage in the town, but just imagine getting hit on the head by one of these babies!
