Now I've reached a point where I wanted a passing siding, so I took out all the bark chips, placed a layer of anti-weed plastic, realigned track, and placed electrical conduit to get power from its source at the north end of the layout to the south end. I will backfill this space not with bark, but gravel. The solar garden lamps have been moved elsewhere.
